Spring is coming!

The beautiful weather today pushed the miserable cold winter a little further from our memories.

We came home from work on Friday pondering what to do this weekend. I have some other plans tomorrow, so we wanted to get out of the house today. Allie suggested going to the dream park, the play ground and a few other places, one being the flower gardens. We knew today was supposed to get nice, but weren’t sure how nice. But it ended up being great! I got a nice 6-mile run outside this morning and it was supposed to get warmer, so we headed toward the east side of town to the Olbrich Botanical Gardens.

We didn’t get going until 3, but then I discovered they were only open until 4 today (starting in April the outside gardens are open until 8). It ended up working out prefect though. We decided to still go and then since we were heading toward the east side, we went and had an early dinner at Texas Roadhouse.

But back to the gardens. I expected everything to be brown and bare, but that really wasn’t the case at all! In fact, there were many areas that were already green! And while there was a somewhat chilly breeze this morning, the wind pretty much went away this afternoon. And with the sun out, it felt so great to be outside.

Go Badgers!

Too bad we can’t afford a trip to Anaheim this weekend! Badgers in the Elite Eight!
Allie was so adorable this morning. When Mama came downstairs in her Badgers t-shirt, Allie wanted to wear hers. I had forgotten she had one though, and she said she had her pink Badgers shirt. And she was right and luckily I was able to find it in a summer clothes box. So we both wore our Badgers shirts today and cheered our team on to victory! Unfortunately Peyton’s outgrown his Badgers onesie. Well, Allie and Peyton cheered them on until halftime when they went to bed. So now Dada says Allie and I have to wear our shirts on Saturday. And since we can’t just drop everything and head to California this weekend, we’re hoping we can find something special to do for the game!

Queen Elsa and applesauce

Allie got the Frozen book for her birthday. We had every intention of taking her to see the movie in the theater (would have been her first), but we never got around to it. So last week we bought the DVD and we finally watched in on Sunday. We all loved it! Dada was home with the kids on Monday, and they watched it twice, and on Tuesday, when they watched it twice again. I’m not sure who’s the bigger fan… Allie or Dada.

Allie came up with this on her own… she put on her Ariel dress from Halloween, these fun pink “high heels” she has for play, a blanket for her ice cape, and she asked Mama to braid her hair. And… ta da… we have Queen Elsa living in our house!
Adorable! Allie was asking this morning to watch Frozen again tonight after work, but we don’t have time for a full movie on a week night. Allie and Dada are close to memorizing the more popular songs, and Allie already has motions she does to “Let it go.”
In other news, we discovered last week that Peyton loves food in pouches and knows exactly what to do with it.
Applesauce in the pouches has quickly become his favorite food. If we’re going to give him some, we can’t take it out until he’s eaten everything else because when he sees it that’s all he wants. Its funny but also a little annoying. In general, I think he’s been on a growth spurt the last few days because every meal is one where we can’t feed him enough and fast enough.

A jumpin’ good time

This afternoon we finally took Allie to the bouncey house she missed out on last weekend when she got sick. We went just down the street to Pump It Up. We’ve wanted to check this place out for a long time, but they don’t usually have open jumping time on the weekends when we could go. But this week is spring break, so a-jumping we went. Allie didn’t want to go in by herself, but once Mama joined in, she had a great time. And we got a workout!

They had some toys there for Peyton too, but Dada had to hold him in the car or he slipped right out!

And we wrapped it up with some air hockey.
Let me tell you… I was glad open jump was only an hour and a half and we didn’t get there until a half hour in! I had decided not to run today and I think that was a good decision. I’m finally sitting down after bedtime and I still feel like I’m in the bouncey house!

The madness of March

The first day of spring here seems like it was pretty nice… I was inside working all day so I don’t really know. But the temp was in the 40s and more snow is melting than falling, so I’m happy! They said on the news this morning we had 99 consecutive days of snow cover this winter and that ranks high among winters in Madison, though not the record.

The first day of spring also marks what I call the first day of the NCAA tournament, even though they have this ridiculous play-in round now. I don’t pay much attention to college basketball during the season, other than the Badgers, and I didn’t even pay much attention to them this year. But we enjoy a good family bracket challenge.

Dada picks his with some sort of college basketball knowledge. I pick mine somewhat randomly. We did Allie and Peyton’s this morning. Allie picked by mascot and Peyton via coin flip. We did this last year too and I don’t remember but I think Peyton’s coin flip did the best of all of ours last year.

Peyton’s coin flip bracket features a Final Four of Stephen F Austin (a school I’ve never heard of), Michigan State, Arizona State and San Diego State. He has San Diego State playing Michigan State in the final with San Diego State as national champion. I don’t know that we have much faith in this bracket. Its already taken a big hit since he picked American University to win over our Badgers.

Allie has a Final Four consisting of Kansas, UConn, Arizona and Texas, with Texas and UConn in the final and Texas winning the championship. This bracket seems to have a little more possibility than Peyton’s.

Mama has Florida, Iowa State, Arizona and Michigan in the Final Four, Arizona and Michigan in the final and Arizona with the championship.

Dada’s Final Four is Florida, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Wichita State, final with Michigan State vs. Wisconsin and champion Michigan State.

Dada says all our brackets are in reasonable shape, but it hasn’t even been a full day yet, so we’ll wait and see!

Looking back

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how much Peyton has changed in just the last few weeks. This, of course, led me down Memory Lane in looking at pictures from the past year of him and the past four years with Miss Allie. Its so fun to see my kids grow into people!

Its kind of sad how many of these pictures he was sick for! This poor kid has had bad luck with germs!

Can we just be done with winter?

After all, its March!

Its been a long and sick winter. We had Peyton’s virus three weeks ago. Then last week he had a little cold. And of course don’t forget our month and a half sickness in October and November where we all had the same cold twice and I got pneumonia. Well now both kids are sick with stomach bugs 😦 They both got sick Saturday night… Allie complete with throwing up in bed and a middle-of-the-night bath. That was a first for us.

We had awhile yesterday morning where Peyton wasn’t keeping anything down. Later in the day he seemed better, but Allie didn’t. We got everyone up this morning to see if we could all go to work and daycare today. Allie said she felt better, but I could tell during breakfast she wasn’t, and I was right 😦 Peyton didn’t seem right either even though he seemed better last night. So I’m home with both sick kiddos again today. Because why save up sick time anyway? Peyton went right back to bed after breakfast and is still sleeping, so I’m not sure if this counts as nap time or not. I felt bad that we woke up the kids this morning because I had a feeling we’d all end up staying home.

We are seeing signs of spring. Until yesterday the temps stayed mostly above freezing and a lot of the snow is melted over the last week. What’s left is mostly the big and dirty snow banks. I’ve gotten to run outside the last two weekends. It feels so good to run outside! Right now I’m sticking to the weekends for outdoor runs. I won’t go outside during the week until its warmer and/or lighter in the mornings. Last Sunday I ran 4 miles outside and it was tough. This weekend I ran 5 miles on Saturday and it was much more comfortable. Its always a shock to actually propel myself forward!

I’ve been thinking about if I will train for the Madison half marathon and thinking I wouldn’t. But with running 5 on Saturday, I actually met my goal of getting to 5 miles by mid-March. So in the next 10 weeks I could potentially add 7 miles to my long run to train up to 12 and then have a short taper and run the half marathon. I surprised myself with those 5 miles. Up until that point I was actually thinking I wouldn’t try to train for the half marathon. But now I’m not so sure. The prices for the Madison races just went up, so I think I’ll take the next two or three weeks to see where I end up and then decide which race to run. If I don’t run the Madison half, I’ll run the 10K instead.

We had a couple really nice days last week. Monday it got up to 53! Unfortunately we didn’t have time that evening to get out for a walk and it was too wet outside. Its still pretty cold right now, but the rest of the week is supposed to be in the 30s and 40s. We’ll get out for a walk on the next nice day because it won’t be so wet!
